    Your Question

    WHY PERFORM AN AUTOPSY?

An autopsy is a post-mortem examination of the body, both externally and internally, for purposes of diagnosing disease, injury, to determine cause of death, and is ideally done within 24 hours of death.

There are five legally acceptable manners of death; natural, accident, suicide, homicide, and undetermined. An autopsy may be the only way to determine this information. Autopsies may include laboratory analysis of tissue, cell samples, and body fluids as well.

The primary reason a medical autopsy should be performed is to resolve any questions that a family, physician, or interested party may have concerning the nature of the decedent’s illness or cause of death. The autopsy can provide additional health information pertinent to surviving family members such as detection of genetic and inherited conditions, contagious diseases and environmental hazards.
